dialogue from the film Bell, Book and Candle;
Shep: That girl you know, Gillian Holroyd, she’s one.
Merle: A witch?
Shep : Yes!
Merle : Shep, you just never learned to spell.
Why Belle & Candle? From the Kim Novak, James Stewart Film – ‘Bell, Book and Candle‘ about a modern day witch who falls in love with a mortal. It is also a form of extreme excommunication for those of the Catholic persuasion that have committed ‘grievous sins’! It’s my favorite film. One day I will have a cat called Pyewacket.
Whats this blog about? – It is really eclectic to be honest. If I were hash tagging i’d go with #garden #organic #allotment #natural #sustainable #herbs #remedies #folkmagic
Me – I live in Central England (Birmingham) with my Husband, two children, four chickens, two dogs and two cats. I long for Goats, but sadly a suburban 1950s semi is just no place for them.
Allotment and Garden – A new half plot Allotment 19b, still early days, but the plan is for this to be Organic, and to produce lots of vegetables, fruit and herbs for eating, storing and making.
Apothecary and Folk Remedies – I love the idea of a modern, suburban Apothecary Garden with herbs for culinary as well as medicinal usage. I am limited with space, with only a regular size garden and half plot allotment that has to work for many purposes, so trying to include as many medicinal herbs is a challenge – as well as learning to store and use them safely and correctly.
Folklore – Particularly old English Folklore and Legends and the wide array of characters and encounters that sit just outside waiting to leap at our windows, and lead us through misty moors.
Home Made – I like to experiment with Natural/Organic Beauty products that are a joy to use, really work and are from sustainable sources. I also enjoy making and creating home made beauty products with an emphasis on herbs and everyday food items.
Hedge Witchery – I am fascinated by the old traditions of healing with herbs, marking the turn of the seasons and plant and animal lore. Who doesn’t need a little more magic in their lives? Even if only lighting a candle and making a wish.
Nature – I try to live in harmony with nature and the seasons, eat seasonally, consume sensibly and show nature the respect she deserves from all of us.
Happiest in the woods, allotment or the garden – with either a trowel or a glass of wine (ideally both)
